Book, The Discovery of Australia
The Osburne Group was was three people, headed by Warrnambool Lawyer Dan Madden, who in the 1980’s republished a few local historical books. Collingridge’s (1847-1929) book ‘The Discovery of Australia’ was a work which supported the ‘legend’ of a Portuguese voyage of exploration, which led to the loss of one of its ships in 1522, believed to be the Mahogany Ship, on the coast south of Tower Hill. Hence European charting of the east coast of Australia centuries before Captain Cook, which the British historians viewed almost as heresy. TheOsburne Group acquired copies of Collingridge from the publisher, and saw that they were made available as a historical record supporting the research of Ken McIntyre, who in 1981 published separately a book called ‘The Secret Discovery of Australia’. The first book by the Osburne Group was republished in facsimile. It was the ‘History of Warrnambool’, collated and printed by Richard Osburne in 1887 after he had sold his newspaper the Warrnambool Examiner to Fairfax, which took up the name of Warrnambool Standard. Hence the name Osburne. Other books reproduced in facsimile form include ‘By These We Flourish’ by C.E.Sayers, and ‘Warrnambool Past and Present by Edward Vidler. The Discovery of Australia Author: George Collongridge Publisher: Kayes Brothers Date 1895 Has a sticker on front loose end page stating " Presented to Flagstaff Hill by Osburne Group"flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, the discovery of australia, book, george collingridge, osburne group -

Tonsil Guillotine, Sluder, circa 1911
New instruments were created using as archetype Physick´s tonsilotome model. Fahnestock, in the United States, 1832, Mackenzie in London, 1880, Brunings in 1908 and Sluder in 1911 in the United "States developed similar equipment. Greenfield Sluder, an ENT doctor, in Saint Louis was not the first to use the guillotine-cutter for tonsillectomy, but he published a study, in 1912, in which he affirmed to have reached 99.6% of success in his surgeries through this technique (1,2). They all aimed to accomplish surgery as fast as they could, especially in children, for the account of the lack of anesthetic techniques." Retrieved from URL: http://www.internationalarchivesent.org/additional/acervo_eng.asp?id=395 Sluder's Tonsil Guillotine large size. This metal piece of tonsillectomy equipment was designed by Greenfield Sluder in 1911. The piece has generalised oxidation spots on its surface but mostly founded over the top retractile arm blade holder and handle, also has sulphated areas at the base of the handle surface with a bluish colouration. This piece has a screw attached on top of the arm as part of the adjustable blade retractile system.sluder, greenfield, tonsil, guillotine, tonsillectomy -

Painting, Ib Odfeldt, S.S. Ulimaroa
Dr Bernie Dunn spotted a model of the merchant ship 'Ulimaroa' at Pollywoodside Museum after which he commissioned Ib Odfeldt, a Danish prize winning marine artist, to depict the vessel at sea.The painting was later gifted to ANZCA in 2006. John Traill, co-owner of Huddart Parker Ltd, named the ship in 1907 after his family home 'Ulimaroa' the building which was later purchased by the newly established ANZCA. The S S Ulimaroa was one of the popular ships in the Huddart Parker fleet that was in regular service between Australia and New Zealand from 1908 to 1934. This service was interrupted by WWI when it was commissioned by the NZ Government to carry troops. During the depression it was de-commissioned where it lay in Sydney Harbor until 1934 when it sailed under its own steam to Japan to be converted into scrap metal. Press, Pill, S Mawson & Thompson
Before mechanisation, pills were rolled by hand using equipment such as this pill press. Powders ingredients were blended together to form a resin, rolled and laid across the width of the platform. The paddle was then used to push the "sausage" shape through the grooves, creating a small, consistently sized and shaped, pill. The pill was then allowed to dry for later sale. This pill press is of uncertain origins but is representative of the type of equipment used to create pills in the 19th Century. It has the capacity to make 24 pills at once, and markings on the metal plate indicate each pill would have been the equivalent of "5 grains" (approx 0.3 grams).Rectangular wooden platform with a metal (brass) plate divided into 24 (twenty-four) grooves with a catchment area. The wooden paddle has two handles, one on each end, with a matching metal plate and grooves, as well as metal (brass) guide bars to help the paddle align with the platform.Handwritten on base of platform in black ink over white background: C11087 Handwritten on inside of guide bar on paddle in black ink over white background: C11087 Manufacturer's detail stamped into metal groove on platform: S. Equipment - Draeger Pulmotor, c.1920
The Dräeger Pulmotor was developed in 1907. It addressed previous concerns about lung injury, by limiting both the inspiratory and expiratory pressures. Although still controversial, the Pulmotor was widely distributed and commercially successful. Oxygen from cylinders provided both the inspiratory gas flow and the driving mechanism. Expiration was an active process and gases were sucked from the lungs by negative pressure created by a Venturi effect. This device came with a facemask and harness, with a caution that the operator should take care to prevent air entering the stomach.Draeger resuscitation kit, inside wooden case with handle. Case contains small heavy gas cylinder with large beige handwritten 'S. M E' inscription on one side. Due to water damage case missing pieces of plywood in corner and floor of case bubbled and swollen.|Rubber decomposed rigidinspiratory, expiratory, pulmotor, negative pressure -
